Matt Porter

President

Matthew Porter is a writer and consultant who lives in Atlanta with his husband of 23 years, George Aguilar. A graduate of Druid Hills High, Georgetown University, and Poynter Institute for Media Studies, Matt began his career Atlanta at Manning Selvage Lee. Later, he worked for Bright & Associates/Chiat/Day, Saatchi & Saatchi/Bangkok, Wages Design/Atlanta, and Lippincott/San Francisco. He began writing for Communication Arts Magazine in 1995. He began PorterWrite in 1997. He served as editor of Neenah Paper’s Against the Grain for 10 years. He co-founded Good Thinking in 2011. His proudest achievement: serenity that began in 2010.

Kathi Roberts

Chief Creative Officer

Kathi Roberts is Atlanta’s “Logo Queen” and the Southeast’s first woman AIGA Fellow. She’s a helluva a fella, gaining love, acclaim, and respect as one of Atlanta’s most visible, prolific, and generous designers while serving hundreds of corporation and nonprofits over her 30-year career. A graduate of Atlanta College of Art, she is past-president of AIGA Atlanta. She’s served as Creative Director for Good Thinking clients Southern Center for Human Rights, Atlanta Ronald McDonald House, and Georgia Appleseed. She lives in Decatur with husband Jerry and is the proud mother of one son, Hill Brown. She co-founded Good Thinking in 2011.

Angela Aquino

Vice President

Angela Aquino is Senior Art Director at Function:, a strategic branding and marketing agency in Decatur. Angela has long been active in design for social impact. She served on the AIGA Atlanta board as Sustainability Chair from 2011 to 2014, and continues to help shape initiatives that highlight and support sustainability, social impact, diversity and women’s leadership in the design field. She found Good Thinking through AIGA Atlanta. Her first project was with GreenLaw in 2014, and she came back in 2016 to serve as Project Manager for State Bar of Georgia’s Access to Justice campaign, “Due Justice. Do Fifty.” Angela was born and raised in Mississippi, and has a BFA in Graphic Design and Photography from Mississippi State University. She joined the board as Vice President in 2017.

Laura Thyberg works at UnitedHealthcare in Minneapolis where she helps lead a cross-functional team of professionals who employ a data-driven, customer-focused approach to improving digital experiences for millions of members. For more than 25 years Laura has learned valuable skills managing large- and small-scale projects for a diverse range of corporations, including Nielsen Media Research (the TV ratings company), AON Hewitt, and even our own GTA. She lives in Minneapolis with her husband Todd, a graphic designer, author, master letterpress printer, and highly respected Good Thinking associate.

Chelsie Nichole

Secretary

Chelsie Nichole is a freelance designer, illustrator, animator, artist and muralist based in Atlanta, GA. Born in Las Vegas, Chelsie grew up south of Atlanta, in Peachtree City, GA. She’s a young woman who’s followed many paths, gaining life and work experience with US Armed Service as well as working as a fine artist, gallery director, creative consultant and, today, mother of two. She believes this variety of experiences are the source of her wonder and inspiration. A graduate of Art Institute of Atlanta (Summa Cum Laude), she holds a a BFA in Graphic Design and a BS in Arabic. Chelsie spent 2013-2017 living in Italy, an experience, she says, “that gave me both a deeper appreciation for my country as well as greater understanding of why many non-Americans have grown disaffected with it.” Chelsie served Good Thinking in 2011 as a contributing graphic designer. She became Board Secretary in August of 2017.

Doug Grimmett

Member of the Board

Doug Grimmett is President and Founder of Primal Screen of Atlanta, the Southeast’s premier motion media design and production company. Doug has vast experience in motion media design and production, with more than 200 national and international awards to his credit. With an affinity for children’s entertainment brands, Doug has directed hundreds of large projects for companies such as Nickelodeon, Disney, Cartoon Network and Boomerang. He is past-president of AIGA Atlanta, an AIGA Fellow, and frequent lecturer on children’s media and design. Thanks to the generosity of Doug and wife Jane, Good Thinking has growing experience in design and production of film and video. This capacity distinguishes us from all other nonprofit creative service providers in the country. That is huge. Doug co-founded Good Thinking in 2011.

Jane Grimmett

Member of the Board

Jane Grimmett is CFO and principal at Atlanta’s legendary Primal Screen. She began her career earning her chops in the competitive world of New York print design world. There she worked for Bloomingdales, Workman Publishing, Lord & Taylor, and famed M&Co. Today she trusts others with design while they trust her with finance, legal, operations, and HR. Jane’s financial stewardship and practical advice has led Good Thinking to be a self-sustaining organization. The generosity of her and her husband, Doug, have provided us with a marvelous space to meet, conduct design charrettes, and expand our skills as film and music producers for motion media. She co-founded Good Thinking in 2011. Jane served at Board Secretary from 2011 through February 2019.

Vicki Strull

Member of the Board

Vicki Strull is founder and creative director at Vicki Strull Design. She brings 20+ years of experience in branding and communications. She served as senior consultant for Atlanta Ronald McDonald House Charities, Southern Center for Human Rights, and the All In! for Georgia’s Education Climate Change campaigns. A Louisville native, Vicki graduated Cum Laude from University of Pennsylvania with continued study at Portfolio Center. Vicki brings to our organization a level of maturity and insight that helps us arrive quickly at the essence of any communications and design challenge. Her skill as a designer and thinker are unsurpassed. She joined our board in 2014.

Carol Vick

Member of the Board

Carol Vick is Good Thinking’s fairy godmother. Whatever we need, whatever we wish, Carol seems to wave a magic wand and make it so. The reason is simple: she is the one woman in Atlanta talent goes to for help finding work and the one woman in Atlanta agencies seeking talent cannot avoid. Born in California, raised in Florida, co-founder of The Creative Circus, graduate of Choctawhatchee High School in Fort Walton Beach, alumnus of Cypress College in Orange County and Atlanta College of Art, bullet points cannot describe the value she brings to us. Five of our current board members were introduced to us by Carol. Humanity, empathy, practicality, wisdom, and calm are the other “small” gifts she brings to Good Thinking. She has taught us there are a thousand ways to say “thank you,” but just one way to say “fuck you.” She co-founded Good Thinking in 2011.

Neil Fried

Member of the Board

Neil Fried is a musician, teacher, and film maker who has lived in Atlanta since grade school. His commitment to the art of film making and the arts community are what attracted us to him. In short, Neil never compromised his love and respect for art film to become an industrial/commercial video maker. Since becoming part of our team, he has built our film production service, serving as film director and editor of “Uncommon Wisdom,” a 7-minute film for Georgia Appleseed; “Books for Cuzco,” a 4-minute film for the NEA Foundation; “Affirm This: Mentors Matter,” a 4-minute film for Gwinnett County Public School Mentoring Program; and “Due Justice. Do Fifty.,” a 3-minute film for the State Bar of Georgia. He is a self-taught web developer, helping us on sites for Georgia Education Climate Coalition, DFCS Mentoring and Enrichment Program, the Gwinnett County Public Schools mentor program, State Bar of Georgia “Due Justice. Do Fifty.” campaign. His love of film, music, and sound design combined with the technology resources available to us through Primal Screen has transformed Good Thinking. He joined the board in 2016.

Artem Nazarov

Member of the Board

Artem Nazarov travels worldwide serving nonprofit organizations. He is a global citizen, former truck driver, intrepid traveler, and enormously gifted still photographer. Artem is a graduate of and teacher at Portfolio Center/Atlanta and his clients include Coca-Cola, Google, and CNN. He’s been recognized in Graphis, Communication Arts (Fresh), ADDY, and AIGA Atlanta’s SEED Awards. He has collaborated on two books, one a present day look at the forbidden zone near Chernobyl and the other a backstage look at the raw and real performers of Atlanta’s Clermont Lounge. He studied law at Moscow School of Social and Economic Sciences, where he specialized in intellectual property law, and continued his education concentrating in photography at Portfolio Center in Atlanta. He’s served as principal photographer on Southern Center for Human Rights, Gwinnett County Public Schools, and State Bar of Georgia campaigns. He never says “no” to us but he might say, “can I do this when I get back from the Amazon?” Good Thinking’s work is enhanced by his skill, talent, and kindness. He joined the board in 2017.

Daniel Skrok

Member of the Board

Board member Carol Vick led us to Dan Skrok — and, boy, are we glad she did. A native of Niagara Falls, Dan and wife Amanda moved to Atlanta in 2013. after receiving his MFA in Computer Graphics Design from RIT in Rochester, NY. It was his thesis project, Perceptions of Poverty, that captured our attention. The four-minute film demonstrated not only Dan’s capacity for empathy, but his skills as a designer, music producer, film maker, sound editor, photographer, and voice over talent. After working in advertising at Eric Mower + Associates, he became Interactive Art Director at You42, a music and entertainment start up. Working with board member Neil Fried, he created this website. He joined the board in 2015.

Rebecca Bedrossian

Member of the Board

Rebecca Bedrossian is global content director for POSSIBLE, where she leads editorial initiatives, creating a culture of content development. Rebecca has been immersed in the world of design and advertising for over 15 years. She served as managing editor of Communication Arts for eight years, where she became acquainted with some of the most talented and kind creative figures in the country. She has served on the board of AIGA San Francisco, and her articles on visual culture and creatives have appeared in publications throughout the industry. She leads our effort to inspire greater civic literacy through our Good Thinking Northwest initiative in Portland. She lives in the Sellwood-Moreland neighborhood in PDX and is the devoted mother of two astonishing daughters. She joined the advisory board in 2017.

Terry Marks

Member of the Board

Terry Marks is founder and creative director of tmarks, a multidisciplinary design firm in Seattle. There, he helps power and guide forces for good with strategy, design, interactive, film and branding. “Ideas sell,” he says, “and great ideas can come from anyone or anywhere, if you are paying attention.” His work has been recognized by Print Magazine, Communication Arts, Critique, HOW, Neenah Papers, Potlatch Papers and many others. His book Mr. Crumbly Dreams a Tiger was selected as among the “Perfect 10” in a national competition sponsored by HOW. He is a regular guest speaker at industry events nationwide, including the HOW Conference, the Make-A-Wish Foundation, the ICON Illustration Conference, The Ad Club, the Art Directors Club and numerous universities and schools. He lives in Seattle with wife Laura and their two daughters. He joined the board in 2015.

Nakita Pope

Member of the Board

Nakita Pope is founder and creative director of Branding Chicks, a creative strategic branding firm specializing in marketing woman-owned businesses. She’s worked with clients of all sizes as a graphic designer, marketer, educator, and branding consultant. She serves as professor of advertising strategy and design at The Creative Circus/Atlanta. A graduate of Hampton University in Hampton, Virginia with a B.A. in Graphic Design and further study at Portfolio Center/Atlanta, Nakita brings a can-do, positive, engaging personality that has made her an asset to our organization. No detail is too small to escape her notice. She gives her best and inspires all around her to do the same. She joined our board in 2016.

Jenny Storino

Jenny Storino

Member of the Board

Jenny has been lucky enough or crazy enough to have worked in Advertising for over 18 years. A passionate and strategic creative, she has made it her goal to work on every medium possible in order to achieve a closer connection between brands and their audiences. There isn’t a business that she isn’t excited to learn about having worked on car accounts, non-profits, consumer goods, services, telecommunications, restaurants, banks and utilities, she enjoys the challenge of figuring out how to connect with the audience in the most strategic and creative way possible. When she’s not discussing the nuances of a well executed CTA, she loves spending any and all time outside – hiking, running, swimming, or biking with her husband and two young daughters.

Terry Combahee

Member of the Board

Terry Combahee learned at the heel of “The Man,” the late Don Trousdale, an Atlanta design legend. Introduced to us by board member Carol Vick, Terry served as creative consultant on our project for Atlanta Ronald McDonald House. Born in South Carolina and a graduate of USC, Terry brings more than 30 years of design experience to us. After his job at Trousdale & Associates, Terry served at J. Walter Thompson Atlanta before opening his own agency, Whitespace Design. His skills cross many disciplines, including identity design, advertising, web design, retail design, and packaging. After serving as Director of Creative and Publications for the Atlanta Hawks and Philips Arena for four years, he opened Combahee Creative. He and wife Jackie live in Brookhaven and have one son, Justin. Terry joined the board in 2014.

Jan Lorenc

Advisor of the Board

Jan Lorenc has deep experience in industrial design, graphic design, and architectural design renders him eminently qualified to lead the design team’s efforts. He is Principal and Design Director at LORENC+YOO DESIGN, a firm he founded in 1978. His philosophy is based on exploration and a commitment to innovation. The projects encompass the overall environment in coordination with other design disciplines. This approach centers on taking all aspects of the project into account – its components, the project team, and its design and technical requirements. This methodology has enabled the firm to work within a wide range of stylistic environments. He contributes passionate design approach which continually produces award-winning environmental communications work. Jan is on the National Board of the Society of Environmental Graphic Designers (SEGD) and the advisory Board at the Department of Industrial Design at Georgia Institute of Technology and has lectured at numerous design programs including: Illinois Institute of Technology, Georgia Institute of Technology, Auburn University, University of Georgia, North Carolina State University, Savannah College of Art and Design, and the Portfolio Center and Art Institute of Atlanta. He has also lectured at regional and national events organized by the American Institute of Architects, Society for Environmental Graphic Design, and The American Society of Landscape Architects. Jan received his Bachelor of Science in Industrial Design and his Master of Science in Visual Design and Marketing Communications from Illinois Institute of Technology in 1977 and 1979 respectively, and his Master of Science in Architecture from Georgia Institute of Technology in 1994. He is a Man of Joy.

Matt Rollins

Advisor of the Board

Matt Rollins is partner and creative director at Iconologic, where he leads the company’s talented team of designers, brand storytellers and system integrators for such clients as The Coca-Cola Company, International Olympic Committee, Paramount Pictures, Visa and Volkswagen. Matt has been involved in the Olympic movement for over a decade, serving as design director for the Torino 2006 Winter Olympic Games and directing an array of sponsorship campaigns. His local clients include Atlanta Beltline, Atlanta Community Food Bank, Georgia Department of Economic Development, and Literacy Alliance of Metro Atlanta. Matt serves the Boards of The Creative Circus, Good Thinking and Waldorf School of Atlanta. He is a graduate of Roanoke College and Portfolio Center. He is a founding board member of Good Thinking Atlanta and is a source of wisdom, design knowledge and succinct, actionable advice. He joined the advisory board in 2014.

Catherine Salinas

Advisor of the Board

Catherine M. Salinas is a federal magistrate judge for the United States District Court for the Northern District of Georgia. She was our client partner on the State Bar of Georgia “Due Justice. Do Fifty.” Access to Justice campaign. She earned a bachelor’s degree at Emory University in 1990 and graduated with honors from the University of Texas law school in 1994. Prior to her appointment to the Federal Courts, she was partner at the Atlanta office of Carlton Fields Jorden Burt. Early her career she served Texas Rural Legal Aid on the Mexican border. She worked at the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit in Atlanta from 1999 to 2000 and at the office of the Fulton County public defender from 2000 to 2002. She brings to us tremendous knowledge and experience as an advisor on project involving social justice and contemporary issues in the law. She joined the advisory board in 2017.

Jessica Wood

Advisor of the Board

Jessica Wood was a vocal and visible client collaborator during our work for State Bar of Georgia’s “Due Justice. Do Fifty.” campaign. Noted for her intelligence and energy, Jessica is a commercial litigator and one of the top 100 Super Lawyers™ in Georgia. She is passionate in the promotion of diversity and inclusion in the legal profession. Her experience with diversity and social justice make her a valuable asset to our board and other legal advocacy organizations she serves. She joined the advisory board in 2017.

Sara Totonchi

Advisor of the Board

Sara Totonchi is Executive Director of the Southern Center for Human Rights (SCHR), a nonprofit law firm providing legal representation to people facing the death penalty and challenges human rights violations in prisons and jails. SCHR seeks through litigation and advocacy to improve legal representation for poor people accused of crimes, and advocates for criminal justice system reforms on behalf of those affected by the system in the Southern United States. Sara and her family immigrated to the United States when she was a child, settling in Chicago. A graduate of Berry College in Rome, Georgia, Sara once served with Georgia Commission on Family Violence, an organization that employs a coordinated community response to end intimate partner violence. She joined the advisory board in 2013.

Gerald R. Weber, JR.

Gerry Weber

Advisor of the Board

Gerry Weber is principal in The Weber Law Offices and focuses on constitutional, civil rights, libel and media law and general litigation. He served for seventeen years as Legal Director of the American Civil Liberties Union of Georgia and currently serves as a Senior Staff Counsel at the Southern Center for Human Rights, as well as Adjunct Professor at Emory University School of Law and Georgia State College of Law. Early in his career, Gerry clerked for the Honorable Carolyn Dineen King, Chief Judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit. He was named one of the “21 Young Lawyers Leading Us Into the 21st Century” by the American Bar Association. Gerry has litigated against federal, state and local governments, agencies, and large corporations. He led the fight to strike down numerous laws, from state restrictions on the internet to state laws barring fornication and sodomy. His work also led to the largest monetary awards in the history of Georgia – a $440 million dollar judgment in an international human rights case against a Serbian government torturer. He joined the advisory board in 2017.
