Determinedly Nonpartisan
Georgia Appleseed Center for Law and Justice was established more than 12 years ago to define and root out systemic injustice in Georgia. Georgia Appleseed is a member of the 18 center Appleseed network, a network founded nearly 25 years ago by the 35th Reunion Class of the Harvard Law School Class of 1958. Good Thinking was asked in 2015 to help the organization revise and update its story as it approached its 10th anniversary.
Of Life and Death
The Southern Center for Human Rights began in Atlanta more than 40 years ago focused on getting people off death row. Clearly, the vast majority of people facing death penalty were black men and nearly all were victims of poor lawyers and lack of due process.
Symone Walker: Color is a Gift
Symone Walker is a photographer, traveler, writer, and, recently, flight attendant. She first collaborated with Good Thinking on the 2014 Atlanta Ronald McDonald House capital campaign to raise money for a second House in Atlanta. Mission accomplished. Symone’s intelligence, grace, and ease are part of her value to us as colleagues and friends. We met with her to discuss her life, work, and thoughts on the pressing issues of the day, particularly the #BLM movement. Her words are breathtaking in their honesty and insight.
Signs of the Times: Love & Honor
The depth and compassion we have witnessed on foot on long walks every day have amused, inspired, and informed us. Nature’s perfection. Homemade messages. Honey bees who are too busy to hate. Frugal success by a local politician. Revisiting Atlanta’s Missing and Murdered Children horror from 1979-1981. Alien botanic beings that might defeat mankind’s greed and cruelty. A long gone pizza joint. Fairies. Lost trolley rails. Unicorns. Polite poop requests. Life has many surprises if you are willing to take the time to explore on foot.
The Blessings We Have Received
There is no substitute for taking the time to find the right stories to demonstrate the value Georgia Casa volunteers (called “Casas”) bring to the children in state care whom they serve and the value that work brings to the lives of the volunteer.
Caveman Lessons
When the first humans scribbled his or her boasts of their hunting tales on walls of prehistoric caves, they left behind a record for future generations. Little did they know that their stories would carry forward nearly 40,000 years.
Caroline Randall Williams’ Essay has Changed the Conversation
This crucial essay by Caroline Randall Williams provides all of us with “Confederate Blood” who are offended by and ashamed of our common heritage a way to respond to those who find this legacy worth celebrating and honoring.
Signs of the Times: Respect & Appreciation
With little other distractions, we take long walks during the COVID-19 shut down. These experiences have a Zen meditative quality. We are alone, together. And the power of neighbor love and the beauty of nature enwraps us in a gratifying embrace.
